CARNIVAL
IN TWO CITIES
BASEL
The Lälli-Clique, one of the oldest carnival clubs in Basel, Switzerland, roam the streets with lanterns and drums during the "Morgestraich" in the historic city. The three-day carnival of Basel, or "Die Drey Scheenschte Dääg," is the largest carnival celebration in Switzerland.
At 4 a.m., the city turns off all of the streetlights in the historic city and the different groups, called “Cliquen," start to swarm the narrow streets. More than 18,000 participants fully conceal themselves, remaining behind a mask until there is an official break.
HANOVER
Hanover is not a traditional Carnival City and doesn't celebrate carnival.
But if you search hard enough, you will find some carnival clubs, who celebrate their own carnival.
Once a year the carnival clubs gather in a private party.
